Why won't my garage door close?

While often overlooked, the garage is a vital part of anyone's home. The garage is where you're going to find the family's car, tools, and other valuable stuff sitting there. You might even find gym equipment that's been sitting unused for years!

Gym machines aside, most homeowners would prefer to keep their valuables safe and sound. But a faulty garage door might prevent that from happening.

In this article, you'll find three common reasons why your garage door isn't closing properly - and how to fix it!

Why won't my garage door close?

1. The batteries have gone bust somewhere

This might sound silly, but the reason that you can't close your garage door is that your remote is dead. Well, the batteries inside of it are - and all you have to do is change them!

If that doesn't fix your problem, you still have another set of batteries to change. You probably forgot about it, but your garage door also runs on batteries.

They usually last for a year or two (and that's enough time to think they'll last forever). Well, those batteries won't last forever - and you have to change them if your garage door isn't closing.

2. Something is out of place or in the wrong place

If your batteries are fully charged and ready to go, you might have an obstruction someplace.

Believe it or not, your garage door is a complex machine with more than one failsafe mechanism at work. One of these mechanisms consists of stopping right then and there when something is in the way of the door.

How can a garage door tell if something is in the way? Well, they have sensors to tell if something is there. And it could be anything: toys, debris, even spiders could block the sensors. All of these can prevent the garage door from closing.

At the same time, you might have something out of place (instead of at the wrong place). Certain garage doors tend to get off track - and when that happens, they won't come down properly. You have to get your garage door back on track, so to speak, to get it to close again.

3. You might need to replace something

As you now know, garage doors aren't as simple as they seem. They are full of parts working together. And you need to keep them working properly if you want your garage door to close.

If your garage door isn't closing, you might have a broken or damaged:
  • Adjustment screw
  • Disconnect switch
  • Roller
  • Travel setting
  • Tracks
  • Safety sensor
  • Springs

Unfortunately, we have no way to know what exactly is going on. The only way we can help you if we go and take a look. And, more importantly, we need to see the garage door in action to know how to fix it.

What should I do when my garage door doesn't close?

Garage doors are a tricky (and, sometimes, dangerous) subject. That's why you should leave fixing such a thing to the professionals - and that's us right here!

We have been in the garage door business for years. There's no problem we cannot fix and no issue we cannot solve.
